In today's political climate, the U.S. debt typically seems to be the center of attention. As our population continues to grow, we are spending more money (duh, right?). As it turns out, we also have more people getting sick (again, thanks Capt. Obvious), but where exactly does all the money go that we are spending on health care? In today's blog, Dr. Zach breaks down an article from the Journal of the American Medical Association that looked at recent trends in health care spending from 1996-2016.

Let's get the staggering numbers out of the way. From 1996 to 2016 the United States saw an increase in health care spending from 1.4 trillion dollars to around 3.1 trillion dollars -- that's 18% of the US economy. *mind blown emoji*

This article broke down some of the most common conditions U.S. citizens deal with and how much money is being spent on each condition.

By an overwhelming margin, "low back and neck pain" saw the highest amounts of health care spending! This isn't news to cheer or celebrate, but it truly is staggering how much money is being spent on these two conditions -- roughly 134.5 billion dollars. Second on this list was "Other musculoskeletal disorders" which is things such as shoulder pain, knee pain, foot pain, etc.

As neuromusculoskeletal doctors, chiropractors are in a unique position to help reduce this amount through evidence-informed chiropractic care.
